Music Workshop - World War 2

The fantastic music service band visited us on Wednesday (14.3.2012) and brought the history of World War II alive with their catchy brand of musical education.

Our WWII news readers kept everyone up to date with latest goings on...

Meanwhile, the children learned about the 'Phoney War', Hitler, rationing and much more about what war was like for normal people - all through the medium of music and song. The band were even forced to take cover under their own instruments when the air raid siren sounded in the middle of a song!

Arts Award - Going for Gold

Sixteen Y4 children from Mr Renwick's class have been presented with the Arts Award for their sculpture work completed in the autumn.

The children worked with local artist and sculptor, Karen Rann, to create full size sculptures out of wood over 3 days. The starting point was the slogan, 'Going for Gold' in line with the theme of the 2012 Olympics. The children were guided in taking their ideas from paper, to 3D model and then full scale sculpture. Along the way this was all documented in a portfolio which they had to submit for assessment.

At the same time the group were challenged to investigate a local arts organisation and give their own interpretation of sculptures exhibited in Saltwell Park.

Leonie from Y4 said, "Our wonderful sculptures were on show at Saltwell Park at the Family Sculpture day. I was really proud."

Arts Award is...

A real qualification awarded by Trinity College London supported by Arts Council England. It is a great way for children and young people to be inspired by and enjoy the arts.

World Book Day 2012 - Thursday 1st March

St. Augustine's celebrated World Book Day this year by dressing up as our favourite book characters. Characters ranged from "Where's Wally?", Desperate Dan and Pocahontas to The Very Hungry Caterpillar (and even his food!). The Cat in the Hat and Harry Potter were popular themes - it was difficult to tell the staff from the children!

At 2.30, parents and grandparents joined us for "Books and Biscuits" and it was absolutely wonderful to see so many people reading to the children, listening to children read their favourite books and stopping off for refreshments. There was a great buzz all around the school and the children certainly appreciated this part of the day.

James took some time to read more of his latest home reader to his mum!
