Shanghai School Days

So... today we finally made it into school and as expected we were treated like royalty. Each of us was assigned a special friend whose job it was to take us around the school and to sit next to in lessons.

When we arrived our Chinese friends gave us all red neckerchiefs, which all children have to wear in junior school here. They start the day with the raising of the Chinese flag and National Anthem. Then the whole school do exercises in rows, just like the army. We were then formally introduced to the school and our China odyssey really began.

First lesson was English for some of us and Chinese for the others. We all sat next to our Chinese partners who were amazing at getting us involved. We exchanged presents and even though we'd only known each other a short time... it was like we had been friends for ever.

The Chinese speak really good English and so we could talk about most things. We had an art class where we made clay bells and music too. At lunch time we ate with our new buddies while the teachers spent time with theirs.

The food was interesting but not what we would have at home. I can't believe we haven't had a sandwich for over a week!!!!!

In the afternoon the school put on a performance of traditional dance, singing, music and games. They were really talented. We performed our Beach Boys song which was cool and the girls did a dance to Justin Beiber's 'Never say Never'. To top off a brilliant show, we all got together to sing and dance. It felt great and like weren't really that different after all.

After that we spent more time with our new pals and got to try out their after school clubs. To top off a really successful visit we went for a meal with all the Chinese teachers. There was some pretty different stuff on the table.

At the end of the day we paid our final visit to the market to spend our remaining Yuan. Nobody has any money left but we're all loving our new things and can't wait to give you our presents!!!

One more sleep here and hopefully one more on the plane... then back in the Toon. It really is  different here but we are glad we came because now the world is smaller we can find out all about it. Totally Mint!!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone, today 3 of the teachers from our partner school picked us up at 8.30 a.m. this morning and took us on a magical mystery tour around Shanghai.

First stop was the Shanghai museum where we saw lot's of old Chinese stuff. Some of it was from hundreds and hundreds of years ago. It wasn't very interactive like some of our museums but the Chinese teachers were happy to explain things for us.

Next stop was Yuan Gardens which was packed with Chinese people and lot's of stinky doufu. It's a holiday here today so everyone was out enjoying the weather. The Chinese teachers took us to a restaurant where we tried lot's of interesting Chinese food and practiced our chopstick skills.

After that we moved on to Shanghai financial tower and went all the way up to the top. We could see the whole of the centre of Shanghai. This is the view...

Finally the teachers took us to The Bund which is the old part of the city next to the river which was build when parts of Shanghai was colonised by lot's of Western Countries.

We ate Western tonight, which was a relief for some people as the Chinese food is sometimes a bit weird.

We've just been in the pool. We're ready for bed now because it's another early start tomorrow . We have to leave for school at 8.

We miss you all but Shanghai sure is sensational!!!!!!!

Then we had lunch in a local restaurant. We had Gong Bao Ji Ding (chicken with peanuts and chilli), fried dumplings, rice and spring rolls. We all used chopsticks and tried a bit of everything. Some of the food tasted a bit weird but was had fun trying.

With tummies full we headed to another market to buy chinese tea and cool clothes.

Old and new Shanghai

We've had the most fantastic day today. ..

A bit of traditional Chinese culture this morning; burning incense and making wishes with coins alongside the Chinese. Then we took the underground to the city's financial centre to check out the Pearl Tower and have some lunch.

After that we spent a while at the Shanghai Aquarium where we saw sharks, giant turtles and every kind of fish you could imagine.

Then Carol and Echo, the Chinese teachers who came to St. Augustine's last year took us to a fab Chinese restaurant.

Then back to the hotel for swimming and bed.

An action packed Mother's Day.
